Story About a Piece

Story About a Piece is about sharing how my designs come to happen.

This is a new series I’ll be posting regularly. And it’s inspired by David Bowie. Bear with me on this because I promise t’s totally relevant…I can make Bowie relevant to anything!

David Bowie is probably the biggest artistic influence in my life. So much so that my oldest child is named David.

Bowie was always a trailblazer, never caring about what others thought. Always light years ahead of everyone else. Never afraid to step away from his comfort zone.

One of the octillion David Bowie quotes that you’ll be seeing in my posts is “I think most artists feel a lot happier discussing the process of what they do rather than what the hell it means.”

For me,  I have a meaning for what the pieces represent.  But what’s more important is what the pieces mean for YOU.

This series will tell you about the thought process while creating the piece; the logistics, for example.

Of course there is meaning behind the design and represents something heartfelt to me throughout the process of designing this, but the point of the Story about a Piece series is to focus more on the designing side than the  meaning.

I hope you enjoy!

Story About a Piece – Guidance Necklace

I wanted to break away from the standard pendant on a chain.  I was pretty much confounded.  No idea how to break away from that.

When I teach my jewelry workshops, I always tell my students that if they hit a creative obstacle, just “doodle” with the wire.  Just take the wire and let your hands do whatever with the wire, like stream of consciousness.

I decided to practice what I preach, so I grabbed a wire and started wrapping it with a thinner wire..  Using a repetitive wrapping technique was calming and soothing.

When I was done with that, I decided to flatten out either end of the wire, so I grabbed a hammer and smashed the ends flat.

Holding this bar-like creation horizontally, it looked like it could be the foundation for something. So I then curled each side up so that I could attach a chain.

Now what do I do?

I really enjoyed the repetition of the wrapping of the foundation bar and wanted to recreate that energy on the rest of the necklace.

I took some wire and at first I curved into a U shape. I did that three times and connected them to the bar by hooking them.

It didn’t feel right to have the curved lines, so I decided to reshape into V shapes.  THAT definitely felt right.

So I continued on with the V shapes until they terminated down to 1.

I then considered leaving it at that.  But it felt unfinished.  So I decided to go with titanium-plated lava stone both for the colors and the spiritual energy.

But after I connected them all I STILL felt it was unfinished.

I tried adding another titanium-plated lava stone but it looked amateurish to me.  But I had an amorphic peacock hematite that went perfectly with the rest of the necklace.

I created a framework for it and wrapped the stone.

And Guidance was born.
